Starting Solid Foods

Introducing solid foods is an important and exciting milestone in your baby's life. The World Health Organization recommends starting at 6 months of age.

Signs of Readiness

  • Can sit with support and control their head
  • Shows interest in food and reaches for it
  • Opens mouth when seeing food
  • Has lost the tongue-thrust reflex

Getting Started

  • Start with smooth purees (rice, vegetables, fruits)
  • Introduce one new food every 3-5 days
  • Start with a small spoon and increase gradually
  • Continue breast or formula feeding as the main nutrition source

Foods to Avoid Before Age One

  • Honey
  • Cow's milk as a main drink
  • Hard foods that may cause choking
  • Added salt and sugar
