Starting Solid Foods
Introducing solid foods is an important and exciting milestone in your baby's life. The World Health Organization recommends starting at 6 months of age.
Signs of Readiness
- Can sit with support and control their head
- Shows interest in food and reaches for it
- Opens mouth when seeing food
- Has lost the tongue-thrust reflex
Getting Started
- Start with smooth purees (rice, vegetables, fruits)
- Introduce one new food every 3-5 days
- Start with a small spoon and increase gradually
- Continue breast or formula feeding as the main nutrition source
Foods to Avoid Before Age One
- Honey
- Cow's milk as a main drink
- Hard foods that may cause choking
- Added salt and sugar
